Motor Vehicle Accident Injuries and Treatment

As we discussed in a previous blog, injuries that are the result of an on-the-job auto accident are common in Brooklyn and greater New York City area, and whiplash is among the most common of these injuries. Caused by a severe jerk of the head during a motor-vehicle accident, whiplash occurs when your body is held still by a seatbelt and the head and neck is free, which can lead to your head making rapid movements in exaggerated directions in the midst of a car or truck wreck.

Though injuries to the musculoskeletal system are usually not visible, whiplash and similar issues can have a significant adverse impact of your quality of life, even if it’s just restricted neck and head movements for a short time.

It is also important to note that whiplash can result in spasms in the injured muscle. These spasms can be painful and may even lead to more damage, so if you experience any frequent spasms, your chiropractor can splint the area to reduce pain and prevent additional damage.

One way to reduce the severity of your whiplash pain is to put yourself on bed rest for 2-4 days after the accident. This can help reduce the inflammation that is almost always the body’s first response to damage, and the first sign that it is making necessary recoveries. It can also prevent you from doing any further damage.

It is very important to have a doctor examine you as soon as possible after the accident, even if you only feel slightly sore or stiff. Those symptoms may be the preliminary signs of a much more serious condition, and it’s possible that your injury may not show itself for an entire week or more after the accident occurred.
