What Do I Do If Conservative Chiropractic Treatment is Unsuccessful?

If you’ve been injured on the job, chiropractic care can help you restore your spine and get back to work. However, there are some situations where chiropractic treatment alone isn’t enough.

If you aren’t responding to conservative treatment, it may be a sign that your injury needs a bit more care. Depending on the location and severity of your injury, additional treatment procedures may be required.

Let’s take a look at what you should do if your conservative treatment is unsuccessful.

What is Conservative Treatment?

Before we start talking about steps to take after conservative treatment is deemed unsuccessful, let’s discuss what conservative treatment includes. Conservative treatment is defined as non-invasive treatments such as medications and spinal manipulations.

While conservative treatments are enough to reduce pain and restore functionality for some, it doesn’t always do the trick. In those situations, surgical care may be required.

What Happens When Conservative Treatment Doesn’t Work?

If you’ve been undergoing conservative treatment to solve a workplace injury and aren’t seeing results, it maybe time to consider surgery. In most cases, surgery is not considered until the patient is found to be not responding to non-invasive treatments.

Patients typically wait a certain amount of time before determining if surgery is right for them. However, this is not true if the source of the patient’s pain cannot be identified. Surgery is also immediately performed if the patient loses control of their bowels or bladder, or if they develop weakness in the legs.

The extensiveness of the surgery is also considered when determining if it is the logical next step for the patient. If the surgery is minimal, it may be considered much earlier than a serious procedure.
