Why See A Certified Workers Compensation Dr.

Unfortunately, most individuals that are injured on the job in New York State are completely unaware that they can receive medical care (with no out of pocket expense) for any injuries that result from that accident. In addition, these injured people don’t know that they can miss work (if physically unable) and be paid lost wages until they are healthy enough to resume employment. Many injured workers in New York State fall into the following three categories:

  1. Do nothing-Injured workers who can’t afford to pay for health care and do not have private medical insurance quite often will stay at home (usually in severe pain), leaving their injuries untreated and undocumented. The result of this can be devastating to the injured person as well as his (her) family. Untreated conditions generally progress and get much worse over time. With the inability to work, many of these individuals are ruined financially.
  2. Pay for treatment out of pocket-Unfortunately, this is a very poor option. With the vast cost of healthcare, the majority of injured workers will be unable to afford out of pocket payment for health care, especially if the injury sustained is severe. Injured workers that pay out of pocket, in most cases, deplete their savings leading to financial ruin. In addition, they are not documenting their injuries and therefore will not be paid for lost wages (if unable to work).
  3. Pay for health care by using private health insurance-If you are lucky enough to have private health insurance, you may seek medical care under your major medical coverage however this presents several problems. By not going to a New York State CERTIFIED workers compensation doctor, you are not providing proper documentation. Without proper documentation, the injured worker is unable to receive compensation for lost wages (if unable to work). In addition, injured patients utilizing their private health insurance will typically have to pay deductibles and co-payments which can be cost prohibitive.

The most important thing to do after you have suffered a work place injury is to seek medical attention as soon as possible. Health ALWAYS comes first. Remember you MUST see a doctor that is certified by New York State to treat workers compensation patients. A certified workers compensation doctor will submit timely reports that will validate your workers compensation claim (as well as your level of disability). By submitting proper, updated reports an injured worker may receive treatment at no cost and subsequently be compensated for lost wages until physically capable of returning to work. When (and if) you return to work, you can still receive treatment at no cost.
