Diagnostic Testing

Proper, needed, diagnostic testing is an essential element to the diagnosis, treatment, and documentation of the injuries sustained by patients involved in accidents. Dr. Jeff J. Mollins has been practicing in downtown Brooklyn for 25 years and specializes in the comprehensive care of patients hurt in accidents. Some examples of these accidents are automobile accidents (no-fault), work accidents (workers’ compensation), construction accidents, and slip and fall accidents.

After Dr. Mollins performs a history and a comprehensive initial examination, he will then determine whether diagnostic tests are required. It is common for Dr. Mollins to refer his patients EMG Studies | MRI Studies | Diagnostic Testing | Brooklynfor general radiology as well as MRI studies. Our referred specialists also rely on diagnostic testing. Referred orthopedic surgeons utilize general radiology (x-rays) and MRI studies. Referred neurologists perform EMG/NCV studies. If needed, VNG and EEG studies will be performed as well. The following is information on the diagnostic tests utilized by Dr Jeff J. Mollins and referred specialists:

General Radiology (x-rays)-An x-ray is an image obtained by placing part of the patient in front of an x-ray detector and then illuminating it with a short x-ray pulse. Radiographs are useful in the detection of pathology in the skeletal system (fractures, arthritis, etc.) as well as detecting some disease process in soft tissue.

MRI-Magnetic Resonance Imaging is a non invasive medical test that helps doctors diagnose and treat medical conditions and injuries. MRI uses a powerful magnetic field, radiofrequency pulses, and a computer to produce detailed pictures of organs, soft tissue, bone and virtually all other internal body structures. MRI examination of the spine shows the anatomy of the vertebrae that make up the spine, as well as the discs, spinal cord, and the spaces between the vertebrae through which nerves pass.

EMG/NCV-Electromyography and nerve conduction velocity are tests which help evaluate and treat problems related to your nerves or muscles. An EMG measures the electrical activity of the muscles. NCV evaluates nerves by measuring how fast an electrical impulse travels through them. EMG/NCV tests are used to diagnose any problem relating to nerves in the spine, arms or legs. These conditions usually cause pain, numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness in parts of the body. Some examples of these conditions include pinched nerves in the neck or back from disc problems due to injury or arthritis, compressed nerves in the wrist (carpal tunnel syndrome), at the elbow, knee, or other area, or neuropathies, such as the numbness in the hands and feet due to diabetes.

EEG-An electroencephalogram is a test that measures and records the electrical activity of your brain. An EEG may be done to diagnose epilepsy, check for EMG Studies | MRI Studies | Diagnostic Testing | Brooklynproblems with loss of consciousness or dementia, to help find out if a person has a physical problem (problem in the brain, spinal cord, or nervous system) or a mental health problem.

VNG-Videonystagmography is a series of tests used to determine the causes of a patient’s dizziness or balance disorders. This test is designed to test inner ear and central motor functions. Dizziness is a common complaint from patients involved in accidents. So VNG testing can be extremely important to confirm or determine a true diagnosis and assess a treatment regimen.

By utilizing diagnostic studies, Dr. Mollins and referred specialists (orthopedic surgeons, neurologists, pain management doctors, physical therapists, etc,) are able to properly diagnose injured patients and incorporate a comprehensive treatment regimen to help our patients achieve wellness. In addition, diagnostic testing is essential in the proper documentation of injuries. When treating patients involved in accidents, documentation and “proof of injuries” is especially important.
