Alleviating the Symptoms Associated with Disc Injury

Slip and fall accidents at work can lead to injuries that vary greatly in range. On the more severe end of the scale are spinal disc injuries, such as a herniated disc. or disc bulges.

Brooklyn workers compensation chiropractic specialist Dr. Jeff J. Mollins is extremely adept at diagnosing and treating disc bulges and herniations. Upon making a diagnosis, Dr. Mollins will usually implement a conservative treatment regimen that includes chiropractic spinal manipulation, as well as physiotherapy and exercise. With more than 25 years of experience, Dr. Mollins previous treatments with this method have proven to be extremely successful at alleviating the symptoms associated with disc injury.

Our spine is composed of a series of bones called vertebrae. The function of the vertebrae is twofold. First, the vertebrae protect the spinal cord and secondly, they enable individuals to stand upright. Each vertebrae is separated from the next one by a softer fibrous structure called the disc. The disc allows us to have mobility (enabling us to move in all directions). The disc also acts as a shock absorber between the vertebrae. Remember, without the discs, our spine would have bone on bone leaving us with no mobility and no shock absorption.

A herniated disc can appear if one of the discs that lies between the vertebrae slips from its place and presses against the nerves. A herniated disc can cause numbing and pain in certain areas of the body. As an individual gets older, they become more likely to suffer from a herniated disc. With age, the protective casing around the spine’s discs becomes weaker and the likelihood it tears and causes a disc to break through increases. The presence of spinal disc disease can also break down the disc’s protective casing and increase the likelihood of a herniated disc.

A herniated disc can be the result of things like a sedentary lifestyle, improper lifting, or jobs that require you to lift, bend or twist in repetitive movements. A chiropractor can assist in eliminating your pain associated to a herniated disc by providing you with spinal manipulation and adjustments, but can also include therapeutic exercises and therapy. Through a series of treatments from a chiropractor, you can begin to feel relief from your herniated disc.
