The Many Causes of Shoulder Pain

In our last blog we discussed how shoulder discomfort is one of the more common pains our patients come to Dr. Mollins’ Brooklyn chiropractic office seeking treatment for. Shoulder pain can affect anyone at any point in life or at any fitness level.

Those who work a desk job and people whose job requires manual labor are all susceptible to injuries affecting the shoulder area. While the cause of shoulder pain varies greatly from person to person, there are certain types of pain and injuries that crop up again and again.

Below, we address some possible causes of shoulder pain with brief descriptions to give potential patients some insight into the many underlying issues that can lead to pain in the upper body.

Referred pain

Pain can be referred from all over the body. For those suffering from shoulder pain, the neck and midback may be to blame.

Bursitis

Bursitis and tendonitis of the rotator cuff can be very painful, sometimes causing something known as impingement syndrome.

Tear of the Rotator Cuff

This is a rough one. Often extremely painful, a rotator cuff tear occurs when the cuff separates from the bone. This condition sometimes requires surgery.

“Frozen” Shoulder

The scientific term is ‘adhesive capsulitis.’ People with this condition ensure severely restricted movement of their shoulder.

Calcific Tendonitis

When calcium deposit exist in a tendon it can cause this condition. Oftentimes, the calcium will deposit within the tendons of the rotator cuff. The way this is treated is dependent on the severity of the symptoms the patient is experiencing.

Instability of the shoulder

A loose and unstable joint is often caused by dislocation or a similar traumatic injury. It is also possible for instability to be a gradual condition, developing over a period of time.

Dislocation of shoulder

This occurs when the shoulder joint slips out of the socket, the area of the shoulder blad which it fits into.

Arthritis

This is among the more widely known of the conditions that can lead to shoulder pain. Although not as common as arthritis affecting other parts of the body, shoulder arthritis pain can be severe.
