Injuries Resulting From Cold Weather

Dr. Jeff J. Mollins, Brooklyn’s premier doctor of Chiropractic is well aware that during the winter months there is an increase in the number of accidents that are specifically seasonal. In his almost 30 years in practice, he has observed that every time the weather gets cold there is an alarming increase in weather related accidents which he believes can be prevented by following certain simple steps. The following is a list of specific accidents that are more common in the colder weather and some simple suggestions to prevent them from occurring:

1. Cold weather causes muscle spasm-The muscles in our body have an immediate reaction to cold. Once the temperature drops, anatomically as a protective mechanism, our muscles will “tighten up”. This myospasm may have a detrimental effect on our body. Tight muscles are much more prone to injury than loose warm muscles. Therefore, any person working a job that requires lifting, bending, or even excessive sitting is in danger of injury which can be mild or even severe. Muscles which normally will stretch in warmer months, will sustain injury in the colder months when performing normal job activities. The simple solution to these health problems is to make sure your muscles are properly loosened up before performing these physical work tasks. Simple stretching, using a heating pad, and dressing properly (to keep muscles warm) prior to engaging in these physical work activities are ways to prevent muscle injury in the cold weather.

2. Poor weather conditions increase frequency of motor vehicle accidents-In the colder weather, road conditions are much more hazardous causing motor vehicle accidents. Whether it’s icy road conditions (black ice), wet slippery streets from sleet or hail, or snowstorms which inhibit visibility, winter will certainly increase the frequency of car accidents resulting in injury. Also, there are many more potholes on the highway in colder weather causing all kinds of accidents. Drivers will often in haste get on the road prior to removing snow and ice from their windshield also causing limited visibility which can result in a motor vehicle accident ultimately causing injury. The solution is to make sure your car is properly “winterized”. NEVER drive until anything that can inhibit your view is thoroughly removed from the front and back windshield of your car. Finally, when you are on the roads adjust your driving to the external environment and extra cautious of hazardous conditions.

3. Watch out for slip and falls-Icy streets, wet floors, and broken sidewalks provide very hazardous conditions for people walking outside, especially the elderly. An injury resulting from a slip and fall can be devastating and possibly life threatening. Avoid going outside if sidewalk conditions are dangerous (if possible). If you have to go outside remember to wear proper footwear and be cautious and aware of your surroundings. Prevention is the best way to avoid a slip and fall accident.

4. Lack of exercise-Many individuals go in to “hibernation” during the cold season. People eat more and exercise less. When the outside temperature is frigid, people generally become less active. This can present a big problem when it comes to health. Lack of exercise and increased food intake can weaken muscles, in particular the abdominals. Having a strong core is essential in protecting the lower back from injury. Often workers that lift bend or even sit for an extended period of time may end up sustaining back injuries as a result of the loss of abdominal core strength. Remember, maintain you level of exercise and try to keep your weight in check during the winter months. Both stretching and strengthening muscles are essential for good health.

Remember, the first thing to do when you are involved in an accident is to see your doctor as soon as possible. Typically, the longer you wait to have your injury treated, the longer it will take to achieve wellness. Call Dr. Jeff J. Mollins immediately as he will see you right away.
